Description

There is overwhelming evidence to suggest that climate change is getting worse and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), like Trinidad and Tobago, that have a low capacity for adaptation will be most affected. Current changing weather patterns, including rainfall (frequency, distribution, and intensity), have become unpredictable. Given that climate change will have direct impacts on land, water, temperature, atmospheric CO2, and weather patterns, these changes will impact crop productivity ...

Quality planting material (QPM) is the key input for successful crop production, both in terms of quality and quantity. Many farmers and producers are seeking QPM for a diverse range of crop species and varieties because it is necessary to help deal with the challenges of climate change and to achieve sustainability in crop production activities. This proposal is seeking TT$363,447.80 to renovate and operationalize the potting shed and nursery at The UWI-UFS to produce planting materials for a diverse range of crop species and varieties. The project will become self-sustaining and contribute to the agricultural industry in Trinidad and Tobago for the long term.

Mission statement

To strengthen The UWI's capacity for research and development of climate change resilient planting material will help to ensure food and nutrition security for Trinidad and Tobago and the wider regional and global community.
