Description

A functional slatted floor system for rearing sheep at the UFS was installed and operationalized around 30 years ago which has deteriorated severely over time. Currently, the building is in a state of disrepair and is primarily being used of storage and limited research. ... .

The Project scope includes:


1.      Renovate roof (remove and replace old galvanize and rafters)

2.      Install slatted floor 

3.      Upgrade plumbing and electrical fixtures

4.      Purchase and install stainless steel countertops and sink

5.      Purchase and install force-drought oven and hammer mill for forage processing

6.      Replace windows and install burglar proofing




Mission statement

Renovate and operationalize sheep and goat production facility at The University Field Station and improve production and use of high biomass/high-quality tropical forages.

Value & impact

Sheep and goat production in T&T and the wider Caribbean is declining. This field laboratory is expected to serve as a model for sustainable production and management of small ruminants with emphasis on optimizing the use of tropical forages as a cheap and sustainable feed resource.
